Into The Deep

Hello Everyone,

I have been in Cape Town for almost 5 weeks and LOVING every moment. I have been enjoying two classes, community service, and research all while trying to experience a new land. I have really become accustomed to my vigorous and busy schedule all while maintaining a somewhat healthy mental status.

Exploration: I have been able to go on a game drive at Fairy Glen Private Reserve and have seen almost all of Africa’s Big 5 (Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Elephant, and Buffalo). The only one I am missing is the leopard. Following the game drive, I went to Solms-Delta for a winery tour and tasting. The wine was okay. The pear cider was awesome, but the dinner was absolutely one the bests I have had. I had Bobotie Pie, which is basically a curry flavored style of meatloaf with raisins in it. I look forward to having that again.

Over the past few weeks, I have been experiencing a more more connected culture than my own. It’s true that I have been living a more tourist like lifestyle, but even when you are somewhere to do community service, you still are a tourist in a new area. I love Cape Town for more than just its historical past, more than its daily struggle, and the people. I love it here because of the earthliness. In some areas, you can look one direction and feel the wisps of the water from the waves, and then turn your head and find the breeze from the mountains. I feel so connected to where I am, so connected to the people around me, and to nature. This surrounding makes it possible to connect to people on a critically deep, emotional level. It helps me understand each of their lives and how we are all interconnected.

I am learning more each and every day along with the countless photos to come.

Until Tomorrow,
